PCOS, Irregular Periods and Weight: How Do They Affect Pregnancy?

Not every case of PCOS means delayed pregnancy. How PCOS, irregular periods and excess weight affect fertility, and how we treat them.

Dr. Ramy Agamy

Your doctor told you that you have polycystic ovaries? Wait before you worry.

PCOS is not one single condition

Some women have cysts on the ultrasound but normal hormones, and for others it's the opposite.

PCOS affects ovulation, but that doesn't mean there is no hope. We treat it with:

  • A simple diet.
  • Ovulation stimulation.
  • Sometimes medication to regulate the cycle.

Irregular periods

If your periods are irregular or always late, we need to find the cause. It may be:

  • Polycystic ovaries.
  • Weak ovulation.
  • Hormonal imbalance.

Regulating the cycle is the first step in treating delayed pregnancy, and sometimes simple medication fixes everything.

Does weight affect pregnancy?

Yes. Excess weight can reduce ovulation, raise male hormones and delay pregnancy.

In men too, excess weight lowers sperm quality.

Losing just 5 to 10 kilograms can increase the chances of pregnancy significantly. And there's no need to start with a harsh diet... step by step.
