First ICSI Attempt Failed? What Now? And What Is Embryo Freezing?

Why a first ICSI attempt can fail and what to do before trying again, plus what embryo freezing means and how it helps.

Dr. Ramy Agamy

The attempt failed? This isn't the end... it's the beginning of understanding.

When the first ICSI attempt fails

A failed first attempt is very common. There are many possible causes, including:

  • Poor embryo quality.
  • An endometrium (uterine lining) that wasn't ready.
  • A minor immune cause.

What matters is analyzing what happened and reviewing the steps with the doctor before trying again. Sometimes we need to change the protocol, or treat something first, before transferring embryos again.

What is embryo freezing?

Embryo freezing means keeping the embryos after ICSI to use them later.

If the first attempt fails or we decide to postpone, we can transfer these embryos without a new round of stimulation.

The success rate is very close to a fresh transfer, and sometimes better if the uterus is well prepared.

If you have frozen embryos, don't worry... your chances of pregnancy are still good.
